As soon as the Koopa lands on the second step, jump. Stand on, preferably, the first (bottom) step of the stairs and wait for the Koopa to come. First, just go through World 2-4 as you normally would, and stop when you get to the staircase at the very end of the level. This is probably the easiest and fastest way to get infinite 1-Ups. Opening all pathways, and complete all levels in addition to their secret Red Flag exits will reward you with a second star.

Submitted by: IGN Staff INFINITE LIVES IN WORLD 7 As Mario continues to bounce, points increase and quickly start to reward him with a 1-up for each bounce, making it easy to rack up a bunch of extra lives before time expires or you complete the stage. If you time it correctly, Mario will bounce repeatedly on the shell, which hits the block immediately to its right and perpetually rebounds. Now you can jump and stomp the shell to send it flying. When it does, you will take damage, but then the Koopa will begin pacing back and forth on a single block that serves as part of the staircase.
Hop onto one of the steps and continue to hold the shell until the Koopa escapes. Then you should grab it and carry it to the right. You can hit him from below to turn his shell upside down. Just ahead of the staircase at the end of the stage, there is a red Koopa pacing back and forth along some blocks. Play through to very nearly the end of World 1-1, making sure that you are Super Mario or better.
